When it comes to the best healthcare news sites and blogs, there are a few clear cut personal favorites with regard to great content and readability.

Most of the stories from our weekly healthcare news round-up originate from great healthcare news sites like these.

The healthcare news sites below have been ranked in terms of 1) consistency of content, 2) quality of said content, 3) communication of content, and 4) cost to use.

The 5 best healthcare news sites:

The 5 Best Healthcare News Sites and Blogs

1. Axios Healthcare & Axios Vitals

Axios is one of my favorite news sites in general and my personal frontrunner for the best healthcare news site.

The site’s best trait is its ability to break down issues into 500-1,000 word articles that the reader can clearly understand in an unbiased manner while presenting data when needed to make or back up a claim.

The healthcare news section is excellent at visualizing data and keeping up with the latest healthcare trends.

I’m a proud subscriber to their healthcare newsletter, Axios Vitals, where the writers churn out consistent, original healthcare content daily. I include them in our weekly newsletter on a very consistent basis.

I can’t recommend this site enough if you’re interested in learning more about healthcare, and what various policies and issues mean to you.

2. Kaiser Health News – Morning Brief

Did you miss anything at all from the previous day’s top healthcare stories? Don’t worry – KHN’s got your back.

Every morning, the nonprofit news site packs its Morning Brief chock-full of all kinds of healthcare news from countless sources.

The Morning Briefing includes everything from KHN’s original healthcare stories, to policy, to state healthcare news, and editorial pieces mixed in, too.

Definitely one of the best healthcare news sites for the comprehensiveness of its content.

If you’re overwhelmed by something with so many articles and links, you can go for something a bit more curated, like Brianna Labuske’s Friday Breeze – her picks for the top healthcare stories of the week (a bit similar to what we do here!!)

The 5 Best Healthcare News Sites and Blogs

3. Healthcare Dive

The reporters at Healthcare Dive do a great job of catching everything going on in the healthcare space. They have a useful daily newsletter, which sends out their picks for the top articles from the previous day.

In addition, everything on the site is free, which is awesome. No paywalls, and a bunch of healthcare content. My cup of tea. One of the best healthcare news sites, especially considering the content you’re getting for no $$$ spent.

The 5 Best Healthcare News Sites and Blogs

4. Modern Healthcare

Modern Healthcare is the industry leader in healthcare reporting and the best paid healthcare news site, especially when it comes to things that are niche and less mainstream (i.e., they’re not just covering the ACA…). You just have to be a paying subscriber after your first few articles (or clear your cookies..but I didn’t tell you that).

Modern Healthcare has, far and away, the most comprehensive healthcare news content, especially when it comes to e-mail newsletters.

There are at least 6 different options to choose from, including a morning newsletter with summaries of healthcare stories, late afternoon newsletter with the day’s trending healthcare articles, and newsletters by healthcare sector (providers, finance, insurance, government, etc.).

If you want the full healthcare experience and you’re willing to pay a bit, Modern Healthcare is the way to go.

The 5 Best Healthcare News Sites and Blogs

5. The Wall Street Journal

Yeah, yeah I know. You need a subscription for the WSJ, AND they don’t really write up too many healthcare articles. But the Journal’s reporting and content is just truly second to none.

The level of data and conclusions they present consistently in their work leaves me in wonder.

Whenever there’s a new healthcare feature article from the WSJ, it’s a must read. Seriously. It’s almost automatic that I include them in the Healthy Muse Newsletter every time they publish.

The only downside to the WSJ (besides the subscription requirement, of course) is that there’s no real newsletter or way to know when a new healthcare article has been published.

I work around that by checking the links every day (I’m a freak, I know…). Big fan.

Honorable Mentions for the Best Healthcare News Sites

These guys didn’t quite make the cut for my top 5, but I still read them…a lot.

Stat News

  • Stat News does a great job of covering healthcare and medicine news. I’ve found that they’re one of the best healthcare sites at covering biotech and drug-related developments.

FierceHealthcare

  • I personally think FierceHealthcare’s news and articles overlap a lot with ModernHealthcare and Healthcare Dive, but everyone has their own preferences, and it’s still one of the best healthcare news sites.

MedCity News

  • MedCity News focuses on the business of innovation in healthcare, providing readers with news on startups, innovations, and other interesting trends.

The New York Times

  • The NY Times is of course similar to the Wall Street Journal, but has certain leanings and agendas that left it off the top part of the list. Their investigations and healthcare findings are still very solid, though!

Bloomberg

NPR Health

  • I would put NPR Health in the same bucket as Kaiser Health. Sometimes they even cross-post on each others’ sites! The nonprofit news source has plenty of good healthcare content, including some podcasts.

CNBC Healthcare & Science News

  • CNBC has the reputation of covering more “click-baity” headlines, but I still think their healthcare & science news has some good content. They have plenty of interesting health tech and startup stories.

ProPublica

  • ProPublica is a less day-to-day healthcare site and more of a “big investigation you need to read” kind of site. Anytime they drop something healthcare-related, the story/investigation makes it around the healthcare community.

Forbes Healthcare and Bruce Japsen

  • Bruce Japsen is just a machine, knows his stuff, reports on relevant but fresh content, and posts about 7 times a week. He’s one of the best healthcare bloggers out there.

Becker’s Hospital Review

Beckers is a fantastic healthcare news site that pulls from a bunch of different sources in addition to having good original content.

  • The content can be overwhelming at times if you don’t know what you’re looking for. They do an excellent job of segmenting healthcare sectors, though.

The Hill

  • The Hill is one of the best healthcare news sites when it comes to covering healthcare policy, with an intense emphasis on politics – what’s going on with what bill, what policy changes the current administration may be seeking…all that good stuff.

Healthcare IT News

  • Healthcare IT News has some good insights into what’s changing specifically technologically within healthcare.
